Gear guru, and Bullet Cable friend, Gearmanndude made a cool video and then shows his own personal pedal board using the SLUG connectors and bulk cable. Super clean, and pretty sweet.

In his rock science (as opposed to rocket science), he mentions all of the easy how-tos and tools you shouldn’t use. We keep it simple, and so does he. Okay, though, he mentions that you can get the kits at gas stations, grocery stores and such… not really.
Everything DIES! This means cables do too, but we are offering a few ways to extend the life of yours. This way, if you do it right, you won't kill your cable and ruin (the potential) best performance of your life.

Most of us loop our coil cable through our guitar strap. We will call it, “the Strap Wrap.” Pretty basic how-to-gig 101.

You don’t have to loop a Coil Cable because it stretches and won’t be affected by problems you have with straight cables. With straight cables, when you step on them, someone else steps on them, or you go long (when your cable is not), they pull out and it wrecks your performance. Regardless, some musicians like to loop their coil to get it out of the way. We planned on this when we designed the coil, but the pitfall, if done incorrectly, is that all the strain is being put on your cable. The fine copper wires in your cable are going to break. The result is a crackle, pop or no signal at all. (Read our post about jacks. They also cause noise and can be disguised as bad cable).

Bullet Tip of the Week: Wrapping Your Coil Cable through Your Strap (the Right Way)

What you will need: Coil Cable, Strap, Guitar or Bass

Technique #1: Straight Connector in the Guitar

Best for Strat Style Guitar Jack Plate

Take a couple of the coils and start with those when looping around your strap. This takes the strain off of the cable at the connector, which bends it in un-natural ways.

Technique #2: Angle Connector in your Guitar or Bass

Best for Flat Plated Jacks, Bass Guitars and Les Paul Style Guitars

Put the angle connector into your instrument. We purposely made the tubing and strain relief longer on the angle side so that you could wrap your cable with this sort of jack. It doesn’t put strain on the cable and connector.

Here is a video that we did on how to wrap your cable properly and how to store your coil cable. If you follow these techniques, you will lengthen the life and experience and rewards of buying better cable.

We have received cables that were damaged caused by musicians not properly taking care of their cables. As our warranty states, we will take care of cables that are defective because we did something wrong during construction. We do not warranty cables that musicians damage. Damage, most of the time, is nothing more than not knowing better.

Here is a video that we did on how to wrap your cable properly and how to store your coil cable. If you follow these techniques, you will lengthen the life and experience and rewards of buying better cable.

Cables are made with precious metals

Quality cables are made from precious metals. Actually, a lot of electrical cords, communication cables, etc., are also make from precious metals regardless of the quality of cable.

As musician’s, we are in the activity of making music and that means that we get the best sound delivery gear, gadgets, instruments that we possibly can afford. Ultimately, we are really trying to express the music we hear in our minds and hope that we can get close enough to reproduce it so others can hear it too.

Why then, when it comes time to pulling the whole assembly together, do we give little or no thought to the cables that we are going to use? They are the signal delivery path that will help you achieve the success of all of your combined decisions, or the noise enhancement line that will minimize your experience.

Your choices actually have an impact.

Here are a few concepts that we propose, considering that we are well aware that we take from the earth and are therefore a part of the big picture:

Expense alone should not define a cable’s quality. Construction techniques define a cable’s quality.

Not all expensive cables are quality cables worth the price, but no ill-constructed cheap cable is ever worth the price.

Any company that has multi-level of quality cables cannot possible have high standards: They have already proven that they are willing to compromise quality by the very act of making inferior cables.

Just outside Butte, Montana lies a pit of greenish poison a mile and a half wide and over a third of a mile deep. It hasn’t always been so – it was once a thriving copper mine appropriately dubbed “The Richest Hill in the World.” Over a billion tons of copper ore, silver, gold, and other metals were extracted from the rock of southwestern Montana, making the mining town of Butte one of the richest communities in the country, as well as feeding America’s industrial might for nearly a hundred years.

By 1983, the hill was so exhausted that the Anaconda Mining Company was no longer able to extract minerals in profitable amounts. They packed up all the equipment that they could move, shut down the water pumps, and moved on to more lucrative scraps of Earth. Without the pumps, rain and groundwater gradually began to collect in the pit, leaching out the metals and minerals in the surrounding rock. The water became as acidic as lemon juice, creating a toxic brew of heavy metal poisons including arsenic, lead, and zinc. No fish live there, and no plants line the shores. There aren’t even any insects buzzing about. The Berkeley Pit had become one of the deadliest places on earth, too toxic even for microorganisms.
Or so it was thought.

I bought my first Bullet Coil in 2005 when The Love Me Nots started. That cable was used for every rehearsal, every gig, every songwriting session and just playing for kicks. It traveled all over the USA with me, did two European tours and three albums, it was in use nearly every day for five years.

I recently swapped a pickup in my guitar and in a rush, grabbed my old toaster cord to test them. The pickup sounded bad and it was a drag because I waited a long time to get it. After messing with settings for 10 mins. or so, I gave up. I returned later to try again, this time I grabbed the Bullet coil and instantly the punch and clarity returned. The stuffiness and nasal quality that I heard was coming from the toaster cord. I was actually really surprised that the coil made such a difference, lesson learned.

That original Bullet started to break up in 2010 after thousands of uses and very rough treatment. It was stretched beyond it’s limit, repeatedly stepped on, yanked out of guitars and fuzz boxes and had all manner of spirits spilled on it. It lasted five abusive years and is the only piece of gear that did not change in my rig since I started this band. I replaced it with another Bullet Coil and wouldn’t think of playing without one.

The Love Me Nots “Do What You Do” from Jd of Damaged Goods Media on Vimeo.

We often get asked, “How long do your cables last?” We have a
Lifetime Warranty, which we mean to refer to our cable’s lifetime, not the musician playing it. But, how do we determine a lifetime? We determine it based on our very active players who have been using the cables for years. Michael Johnny Walker is one of those artists. You see, a warranty is more or less about how we make right, when we do wrong. When we do it right, however (which we think is most of the time), it is pretty awesome because we get letters like this that seriously make we want to weep.

We love you man (and The Love Me Nots rock!)

Kendra Morris became a Coil Cable user at the 2009 Winter NAMM, held in Anaheim, CA.

She was playing in our friend’s booth at Electro-Harmonix doing demos of their products. Bill Stouraites the company rep in the booth, whom we have had a relationship with over the years, lives in NY in the city. He told me that Kendra had a growing fan base at the clubs and that she was really someone to watch. Bill has a pretty good sense of upcoming artists so we I walked over and introduced myself and asked her if she wouldn’t mind trying out the cable and letting us know how she liked it. Kendra ended up using it throughout the show, I watched her play in a noisy environment in which she had a small crowd of music appreciators around her leaning in to hear her play. She is sort of like magic, and I could see it.

<img src="http://www.bulletcable.com/wp-content/uploads/Kendra_Morris_NYC_telephones1.jpg" alt="Kendra Morris Still from video, "Telephones"" />

Being a child of a musician, her dad told her about the Coil a year earlier and she thought it serendipitous that we were there offering her one to try out. I told her dads tend to know best, “It’s what they are there for.”

At Musik Messe this year, Ted was a guest in Sound Service’s booth, our Germany distributor who hosted a full display of our Cable Bar and cables. Kendra was at the show and they had a chance to reconnect. Today he sent me her video, “Telephones” which he posted on his facebook page. I think it worth sharing in this forum too.

Today, think of at least one choice you made that defines your freedom to be who you want to be.

Peace.

Our retro vintage-style Bullet Coil cable has over-sized relaxed coils and chrome .44 Mag bullet connectors in straight and angle. The Classic model, our first coil cable, introduced in 2004, has brass .44 Mag bullet straight/straight connectors. The construction inside the connectors contains our signature P.E. potting for strength and durability against loss of signal that happens when cables are pulled out of gear time and time again.

The coils are great for guitar, bass, and keyboards.

Tonally the Bullet Cable Coil displays a full range of frequency, excellent bass weight, it hits hard in the mids, and caress the high notes with perfect clarity. Of all the Bullets the Coils have the most sonic personality. You can listen to it here.

Bullet Cable Coil comes in 30′ and six colors Black, White, Red, Clear, Black with White Stripe, Red with White Stripe and the Black Classic Straight to straight.

Some of the artists that use this model are Prince, Paul Gilbert and Lou Reed.

Paul Gilbert asked us to include him as a Bullet Cable endorsee when he approached us at Winter NAMM 2008. He had been using, and publicly decreeing coil cables as his choice beginning in December 2006 when he appeared with John Petrucci on the cover of Guitar One Magazine. This article tells the story about our response to finding out that a present day legend was showcasing one of our best selling cables.

[---Some links open in new window---]

We got the scoop on this photo spread and cover from a good inside connection at one of our favorite magazines. He said (his name is withheld because we need scoops, and want to protect his identity), “We did a shoot with Paul Gilbert. I just saw the hot-off-the-press issue and if this is your red coiled cable, you guys are going to be really happy!”

He sent us this image:

Paul Gilbert – Guitar One, December 2006
Photo: Neil Zlozower

Being a huge fan of top guitar players of all time, we couldn’t believe that Paul Gilbert was so boldly showcasing our cable. We didn’t even know that he used it.

Was this a statement that cables could actually be cool? Not just wires that carried sound, as indicated in all of those “rock star and their rigs” articles that always showed cords as just a schematic of lines running between the “real” showpiece items?

Can you imaging this photo with just a black straight cable?

And then we wrote to Mr. Gilbert, who endorses DiMarzio cables and we asked, “Paul, are you using our cable these days, or did Neil Zlozower, (the legendary rock photographer), just prop out the photo so that Guitar One could use those cool red scribbles as graphics for the full spread?”

Paul answered us back and said he does use the cables and he bought his at a music store. He said that he endorses DiMarzio, but that he will keep buying Bullet Cable because they sound really great.

How cool for us? …

So then we got our copy of Guitar One in the mail, and the excitement grew.

Cover of Guitar One Magazine, Dec 2006
Paul Gilbert and John Petrucci

Here we have a cover with John Petrucci and Paul Gilbert, two of the top guitar players in the world, being connected by our very favorite red coil Bullet Cable!

Talking about the red cable, a few months ago we purchased a couple thousand more than what we usually sell because it seems like everyone who is at the top of their game or in-the-know is using them now. We have also been reviewed by Bass Player and Guitar World, and AP Magazine, and everyone keeps showing the red coil cables. Ask your dealer if s/he carries Bullet Cable. If s/he doesn’t, ask, “What’s up with that?”

Follow Up: Here is a cool you tube showing Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert and Joe Petrucci jamming for the crowd in Montreal. The coil cable loves “Purple Haze”.

I am pretty sure that Joe Satriani is using the clear Bullet Coil Cable in Madison Square Garden:
